Write Context Hints for ChatGPT Ads
Use customer intent to write focused context hints that help ChatGPT show your ads in the right conversations.
Write context hints based on customer intent, organize them by ad group, and add them to your
.1. Understand How Context Hints Work
Context hints take the place of Google keywords in ChatGPT Ads. Instead of matching the exact words someone types, ChatGPT looks at what the conversation is about and decides whether your ad would be useful.
A context hint describes your service, who it helps, and when it's useful. ChatGPT reads your hints alongside your ad title, ad body, and landing page.
Keep in mind:
- Hints guide matching. They aren't exact-match rules. People don't need to use your words for your ad to show.
- Hints don't guarantee delivery. They make your ad eligible for relevant conversations. OpenAI still decides when an ad is shown.
- Hints don't exclude anyone. There are no negative context hints. Use excluded locations and excluded custom audiences in ChatGPT Ads > Configuration to control who you don't reach.
2. Start With Customer Intent
Think about what someone would ask ChatGPT when they're ready to use your service. People ask ChatGPT full questions, often with details about their situation.
For example, a dance studio's customers might ask:
- "Where can I take dance classes near me as a total beginner?"
- "What's a fun workout for adults who hate the gym?"
- "Are there hip hop classes for adults in [city]?"
- "What's a fun activity for a bachelorette party?"
Focus on questions where someone is close to making a decision, rather than broad topics.
For example:
Higher intent - "Where can I take a beginner adult dance class this week?"
Lower intent - "What is the history of hip hop dance?"
Ask yourself: If someone asked this question, would they be a potential customer for this location?
3. Turn Questions Into Context Hints
Write each hint as a clear, natural phrase that covers one idea. A hint should explain the customer need, not just name your category.
| Weaker hint | Stronger hint |
|---|---|
| dance | beginner dance classes for adults with no experience |
| fitness | fun group workout for adults who don't enjoy the gym |
| party | group dance class for bachelorette and birthday parties |
| hip hop | hip hop dance classes for teens and adults |
A detail already on your landing page can still make a useful hint when it ties a feature to a need. For example, "no experience needed" matters more as "dance classes for adults who have never danced before."
Find Hint Ideas
You don't need a keyword planner to find good hints. Look at:
- The questions customers ask at the front desk, on the phone, or in reviews
- Your FAQ page and service descriptions
- Your top-performing Google Search keywords, rewritten as customer needs
- ChatGPT itself. Ask it, "What questions would someone ask before signing up for [service] near them?"
4. Choose Your Context Hints
Before adding a hint to your campaign, ask:
- Does this hint describe what we actually offer?
- Does it describe a real customer need or situation?
- Does it add context the ad title and body don't already cover?
- Does it match the ad group's service and landing page?
- Is it true for every location that will run this playbook?
- Could it attract people looking for something we don't offer?
Keep your list focused. A handful of distinct, relevant hints is easier to learn from than a long list that covers everything.
5. Organize Hints by Ad Group
Keep each ad group focused on one service or customer need. If you're promoting services for different people or reasons, create a separate ad group for each one, with its own hints and ads.
Example
Ad Group: Adult Beginner Classes
Context Hints:
- beginner dance classes for adults with no experience
- fun group workout for adults who don't enjoy the gym
- social activity for adults looking to meet new people
- low-pressure way to build confidence through dance
Ad Group: Parties & Events
Context Hints:
- group dance class for bachelorette and birthday parties
- fun team-building activity for coworkers
- unique group outing for friends celebrating a special occasion
6. Add Your Context Hints in Flamel
Once you've written your hints:
- Go to ChatGPT Ads > Create > New Playbook.
- Complete the Campaign Setup step.
- Navigate to Ad Group Setup.
- Enter your hints in the Context hints field, one per row.
- Make sure the hints are closely related to the ad group and landing page.
Use Variables for Local Hints
. Type{{ in the field to add one. Flamel fills in each location's details when the playbook deploys.
Set Default Hints
Hub admins can also set Default context hints under ChatGPT Ads > Configuration. Flamel uses them for any workspace that doesn't set its own. Read
.7. Match Your Hints, Ad, and Landing Page
ChatGPT looks at your hints, ad title, ad body, and landing page together. When they all tell the same story, it's easier for ChatGPT to recognize when your ad fits a conversation.
For example, if your hint is "dance classes for adults who have never danced before":
- Title: "Beginner Dance Classes for Adults"
- Body: Mentions that no experience is needed
- Landing page: Leads to the beginner class schedule or booking page
A useful test is: If someone clicked this ad from this conversation, would the landing page answer their question?
for how to write titles and body copy that work with your hints.8. Review Before Launching
Before creating your playbook, make sure:
- Your hints describe real services you offer
- Your hints reflect customer needs, not single category words
- Each ad group focuses on one service or need
- Hints are true for every location running the playbook
- Hints match the ad title, ad body, and landing page
- Excluded locations or audiences are set in Configuration where needed
9. Improve After Launch
Use ChatGPT Ads > Analyze > ChatGPT Ads Analytics to see how your hints are performing.
- Low impressions: Your hints may be too narrow. Add hints for other related needs.
- Impressions but few clicks: Your hints may be too broad, or the ad may not match the conversation. Tighten the hints or test new titles.
- Clicks but few conversions: Review the landing page and offer.
