Choose the Right Meta Ad Type for Your Campaign

Choose the Meta campaign objective that best matches your marketing goal, whether you're building brand awareness, driving website traffic, generating leads, or increasing sales.

Not every Meta ad campaign has the same goal. Some campaigns help more people discover your business, while others encourage customers to visit your website, interact with your content, or take action.

Choose the Right Campaign Objective

Awareness

Best for: Helping more people discover your business.

The Awareness objective is designed to increase visibility for your brand, products, or services. It helps you reach people in your target audience and build familiarity with your business.

Choose Awareness when you want to:

  • Introduce your business to new audiences
  • Promote a grand opening or new location
  • Increase local brand recognition
  • Build awareness of a new service or offer

Example: A new fitness studio runs ads to introduce its brand to people in the surrounding community.

Keep in mind: Awareness helps people recognize your business, but it isn't primarily designed to generate leads or sales.

Traffic

Best for: Sending people to your website or another destination.

The Traffic objective is designed to encourage people to click your ads and visit a website, landing page, or other destination. It's useful when you want potential customers to learn more about your business or explore a specific offer.

Choose Traffic when you want to:

  • Drive visitors to your website
  • Promote a service or special offer
  • Send people to a booking or registration page
  • Increase visits to a specific landing page

Example: A dance studio runs ads directing people to a page where they can view class schedules and sign up for an introductory class.

Keep in mind: More website visits don't necessarily mean more leads or sales. If your main goal is to collect inquiries or drive purchases, consider Leads or Sales instead.

Engagement

Best for: Encouraging people to interact with your content.

The Engagement objective helps increase interactions with your ads and content, such as likes, comments, shares, video views, or other available engagement actions.

Choose Engagement when you want to:

  • Encourage likes, comments, and shares
  • Increase video views
  • Promote an event or community activity
  • Get more people interacting with your content

Example: A franchise location promotes a community event with ads encouraging people to watch a video, engage with the post, or learn more about the event.

Keep in mind: Engagement can help build visibility and interest, but interactions don't always translate into website visits, leads, or sales.

Leads

Best for: Collecting information from potential customers.

The Leads objective is designed to help you generate inquiries and collect contact information from people interested in your business. Depending on your campaign setup, you may be able to collect information through an instant form, website, or another supported destination.

Choose Leads when you want to:

  • Collect customer contact information
  • Generate appointment or consultation inquiries
  • Encourage people to request more information
  • Build a list of prospective customers

Example: A home services franchise runs ads offering a free estimate and collects contact information from interested homeowners.

Keep in mind: Focus on the quality of the leads, not just the number collected. A campaign that generates fewer but more qualified inquiries may deliver better results.

Sales

Best for: Encouraging people to make a purchase or complete a conversion.

The Sales objective is designed to find people who are more likely to take a valuable action, such as purchasing a product, booking a service, or completing another conversion on your website or through a supported sales destination.

Choose Sales when you want to:

  • Increase online purchases
  • Drive bookings or reservations
  • Encourage customers to complete a transaction
  • Increase revenue from a specific offer

Example: A beauty franchise runs ads promoting a service package and directs potential customers to book an appointment online.

Keep in mind: Sales campaigns work best when your conversion destination and tracking are set up correctly so Meta can optimize toward the action you want customers to take.

How to Choose

If your main goal is…Start with…
Introduce your business to more peopleAwareness
Send people to your website or landing pageTraffic
Increase interactions with your contentEngagement
Collect contact information and inquiriesLeads
Drive purchases, bookings, or other conversionsSales

Choose your objective based on the action you want customers to take, not just the metric you want to increase.

For example, if your goal is to generate appointment requests, Leads may be a better fit than Traffic. If your goal is to increase completed online bookings and you have the right tracking in place, Sales may be a better option.
